Ireland joined the EEC in 1973 and never looked back. It was the EU that helped transform a small island on the edge of the Atlantic into one of Europe's most dynamic economies. Irish identity and European identity are deeply intertwined, and Ireland consistently tops the polls as the most pro-EU country in the union. The Irish have always known how to show some love.
